DONNELLY'S WEIR AND THE BICENTENNIAL NATIONAL TRAIL
Never thought to venture across the water at Donnelly’s Weir? it’s worth the effort ! Donnelly’s Weir is home to many types of native flora and fauna, and has many shady walking tracks and picnic areas. If you’ve never seen a lyrebird in the wild, then this is the place to go. The Weir is also the start of The Bicentennial National Trail (BNT), Southern End, in which R.M. (Reginald Murray) Williams officially opened in October 1988. The BNT is the longest marked non-motorised trekking route in the world. From Cooktown in tropical North Queensland to Healesville, it covers and incredible 5,330 kilometers. It was the inspiration of R.M Williams, whose dream was, to have a National Horse Trail linking the old coach and stock routes of our early pioneers, as well as eighteen of our National Parks. A committee was formed and led by R.M. Williams who, also initially sponsored Dan Seymour, to find a route up the Divide and gather enthusiasm for the concept from the communities along the way. Dan’s 21 month ride finished in September 1973. The Trail has been designed to be a “living history” of our country, highlighting historic sites and covering some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia, ranging from lush tropical rainforests, rugged mountains, valleys and gorges, remote dry plains, alpine meadows, snowfields and wilderness. So even if you are not energetic enough to cover the 5,330 kilometers of the BNT you can at least enjoy the serenity and peace of Donnelly’s Weir, right in our own backyard !
