HISTORY OF HEALESVILLE Healesville was named after Richard Heales, the Premier of Victoria in the 1860’s. It was due to the Gippsland and Yarra Valley goldfields that resulted in a settlement forming at Healesville and was surveyed as a town in 1864. In 1866 there were 30 business’ including six hotels and a primary school. It was also selected as the site for neglected black, half-caste children and an asylum for infirm blacks, hence the Coranderrk reserve in Badger Creek was created in 1865. As the goldfields in Gippsland declined, some miners took up farm occupations, timber cutting also began to increase. In 1881 the railway had been opened between Hawthorn and Lilydale, expectation of the railway’s extension to Healesville stimulated business and population growth. In 1887 Healesville shire was formed and two years after, the railway link was opened. Maroondah Weir was built in 1891. The water shed for the weir was built in the town of Fernshaw and timber cutting was to be limited. In 1893 the Library and Mechanics Institute was opened and despite the limits put on timber cutting Healesville’s economy grew. In the 1920’s the Tourist and Progress Association published “Healesville, The World-famed Tourist Resort”, listing over 40 beauty spots and 20 hotels and guest houses. The construction of the Maroondah Dam in 1927, replacing the weir, brought several hundred workmen to Healesville. Their departure and the 1930’s depression meant that Healesville’s restricted range of industries, timber and tourism, were not stable enough for sustained growth. In 1934 the Sir Colin Mackenzie Sanctuary for Australian Fauna and Flora was opened on land that was part of the Coranderrk reserve. This sanctuary is of course still in operation today and is one of Victoria’s premier tourist attractions. The Second World War increased timber cutting again, initially concentrating on harvesting trees damaged in the Black Friday bushfire in 1939. Although there were petrol shortages, motor travel made Healesville a convenient wayside stop for many travelers. The Golf House guest house was taken over in 1951 for the RACV Country Club. In January 1957 the hospital was opened and in 1961 the central school was replaced by a high school. Healesville shire as it was known ceased on the 15th December 1994 and was split and incorporated into other shires within the area. Healesville’s census populations were, 1881 (207), 1901 (907), 1933 (2035), 1954 (3566) and 1991 (6264). The shire’s census after most of the significant boundary changes were 1961 (5941), 1981 (9760) and 1991 (11755). The median house price rose from 70% to 80% of the metropolitan average between 1981 and 1986. Resource; http://localhero.biz |
