Healesville is located in Melbourne's scenic Yarra Valley, east of Yarra Glen and north-east of Lilydale.

The commercial centre of Healesville is situated along the tree-lined boulevard of Nicholson Street, which features a large selection of specialty shops, the historic Grand Hotel, and a modern shopping complex built around the local Coles supermarket.

Healesville is surrounded by mountains, forests and rolling hills dotted with wineries, fruit and berry farms and the Yarra Valley Dairy where there is a large selection of goat cheeses available for purchase.  One of the best views of Healesville, Mount Riddell and the surrounding valleys can be enjoyed from Mt Rael Lodge, just off the Yarra Glen Road.

Just north-east of town is the Maroondah Reservoir, which offers colourful gardens, BBQ and picnic areas, and elevated damn wall provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.  Four kilometres south of the town centre is the Healesville Sanctuary, featuring an impressive collection of bird, mammals and reptiles.

A popular scenic drive is north-east along the Maroondah Highway through the dense forests at Black Spur towards Marysville.  A vital catchment for Melbourne's water supply, Yarra Ranges National Park is home to forests of Mountain Ash, rainforest and fern gullies, and the endangered Leadbeater's Possum.  Stretching from Healesville to Warburton, from the headwaters of the Yarra to Marysville, this national park was declared in 1995.
